My Process is Direct. I start by listening in order to fully understand the client's objectives and confirming the projects desired outcomes. Conceptual solutions are then developed that are relevant to the specific audience to encourage a desired set of actions. Once a direction is approved, I spend the bulk of my time refining the language and crafting visuals to meet the project deadline. The final materials will be true to your brand and tell an authentic story.
A Unique Perspective
Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center hired me to design a billboard to promote a new million dollar piece of equipment. I suggested we create a campaign to let people know why they bought it. That made them stop and think, and encouraged a deeper discussion on their objectives.
The Visionary campaign became a year-long initiative where I designed the ads, wrote the copy, and visited key departments to take the photos used in the advertising. In the end it solved their objectives to showcase the hospitals technology and give recognition to the experts providing the care.
We Have Lift-Off
Summer Scholars, a youth literacy non-profit, had an endowment campaign and if they could raise 1 million dollars in 3 years, it would be matched for a total of 2 million dollars. I branded it with a conceptual theme and created a system to update and produce materials in-house to help with costs.
It was a great success and they raised the money in about 6 months. I like to pretend it was all because of the materials I helped produce, but of course I know they have an amazing and necessary program for the community. I was just lucky to go along for the ride.
Award Winning Design
The Colorado School of Mines Tourmaline Award was created to honor exceptional philanthropic commitment to the school.
I worked with 5-6 sources and used common materials in a way that was progressive and contemporary. Something that spoke to engineering and it's precision–but delicate and solid all at the same moment. The black tourmaline in the center represents the recipient standing on a solid foundation–looking upward towards the possibilities of education and the future.
The key reason they approved the direction: when the award is viewed directly from the top, the exact shape of the university logo is created by the intersecting glass disks-inspired by a Venn diagram which conceptually shows the interconnected nature of the university’s expertise in earth, energy and environment.
Sign Me Up
I designed, screen printed, and handed out nearly 200 of these posters at the 2017 Nationwide Solidarity March for Peace as a way for individuals (including myself) to feel part of something larger that was taking place around the country. Nobody asked me. Nobody paid me. I had the time, I had the paper, and I seek to find ways to use my graphic design skills to help our community in positive ways. It's never been my belief that design will save the world, but I am hopeful at times that it can support individuals and organizations that are making a difference.
Little Projects with Big Ideas
The United States Olympic Committee asked me to design a series of cards to thank volunteers and donors after the 2016 Olympics. A curious project and one might consider it trivial, but I saw it as an opportunity to celebrate the culture of Rio de Janeiro and support the values behind the games.
I used common patterns found around the city that visually complemented the supplied photos of athletes who are pushing to cross that finish line. I then chose Spanish words, and individual letters were a mix of the ring colors.
Substance over Sparkle
After 9/11, I was asked by the Marketing Director of HealthONE to create an ad for Presbyterians/St. Luke’s Hospital, thanking the community for their support in donating blood. They suggested the design include a full-color photo of a doctor, a patient and their family, perhaps some dramatic lighting with soft focus, and a big “thank you” on it.
My presentation included a layout with those elements, but I also presented this layout to conceptually show a greater empathy and understanding of what the individual blood donations meant to the country. They chose this version based on the concept and after the ad ran they had a call increase of 90% and 60% in donations.
Obviously the state of the nation was full of tragedy and I would not pretend that the design of the ad was the reason for the increase. But I do believe as a viewer looking at this ad, it would give me a stronger sense that as an individual, I had something tangible I could do to be involved to support the community
AD COPY
Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center sends a heartfelt thanks to our employees who collected blood during our nation’s time of need. Many thanks also go to the P/SL family of staff, physicians, volunteers, patients and our community who so generously responded to the request for blood. Our hearts, thoughts and strength are with those touched by the recent tragic events.
Please join in the continuing effort to help our fellow Americans by donating blood.
The following categories are a good snapshot of work I've created over the past 15-20 years where I tend to focus on organizations and companies who offer services to help the community, rather than selling products. My insights are also based on personal experience as I'm an active participant.
I've served on 3 non-profit boards, continue to teach kids workshops and organizing events where many of them also raised funds for community initiatives, and continue to design and screen print protest posters given away at marches and protest gatherings to support social issues.

My first client poster was designed and produced in 1992. I could fill many more pages, but instead I picked out some of my favorite client and art prints that have a good story to tell from the past few years. And of course you will find a few more posters sprinkled here and there in the other categories.

CLIENT SUMMER SCHOLARS > PROJECT EXISTING DESIGN CLIENT PHOTOGRAPHY
LOCATION STUDIO + ON-SITE AT SCHOOLS > BUDGET $
I've had a camera since I was six years old where I took photos of what was in front of me. As I got older I tended to take close up detail photos or find myself looking for unique angles. In my college courses I started setting up more conceptually work to support my graphic design projects. But my best skill is making people feel comfortable to get authentic photos.

When using my photography for personnel work, it is reproduced in one of several processes since each has it's own nuances. It can be traditional photos, re-imagined as screen prints, or it becomes part of a more intricate digital illustration. I don't prefer one process over the other, instead I enjoy the challenge of bringing the viewer into my story.
